BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN SERIES
FROM UPTON BOOKS

THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN SERIES is entirely devoted to "The Battle." Each volume in the series will be presented by an author who has thoroughly analyzed the extensive Custer's Last Stand bibliography and visited the historic battlefield. Based on extensive research, the author's conclusions will reflect his or her evaluation of how the battle developed. The publisher, Upton and Sons, will provide guidelines setting the framework within which the author should work. That is to say, there are certain landmark issues that must be addressed, such as: Did Custer disobey orders? Did Custer reach the river? What was the role of the Crow Scouts? Curley's story, and a host of other controversial issues. Please write the publisher to obtain specific guidelines for THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN SERIES.

Volume III. THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY, by Jack Pennington.

Author Pennington critically examines the statements and testimonies of participants (both Indian and white) as well as other writer's scenarios concerning the battle and its aftermath. The development of the battle is reconstructed after evaluating Reno's attack orders and his actions after separating from Custer and crossing Ford B., the sightings of Custer on the ridge, the statements of Sergeant Kanipe and Trumpeter Martin, Arikara and Crow accounts, including a deep study of Curley's stories. Twenty-seven Sioux and Cheyenne accounts are skillfully dissected and integrated into Pennington's analysis. Statements given at the Reno Court of Inquiry in 1879 and the confusing time zone/watch synchronizing-problem is addressed. Of special interest to Battle of the Little Big Horn students will be the author's analyses of the writings of fourteen of the leading Custer experts who have written extensively on the battle. Pennington has evaluated the writings of Robert Ege, Charles Kuhlman, Thomas Marquis, W.A. Graham, Jerome Greene, Richard Hardorff, Douglas Ellison, Fred Dustin, David Humphreys Miller, John Gray and James Willert and presents his candid opinions of their Little Big Horn conclusions. Pennington says, "...to arrive at a more accurate conception of the battle one has to be objectively critical of others' viewpoints, just as they should be critical of those I support." This book is a fresh approach to the subject and well worthy of inclusion in the Battle of the Little Big Horn Series, of which this is Volume Three. Full-color just-jacket (C.M. Russell's "Custer's Last Fight"), 373 pages, photos, maps, index, bibliography, 3.5 x 11 inches to match previous volumes in the series. Robert M. Utley says, "This is a provocative, highly personal analysis of the manifold issues of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pennington has done his homework, knows his subject thoroughly, and boldly sets forth his own conclusions and his criticisms of others, both primary and secondary. He will spark plenty of debate, but he is certainly worth studying." ISBN:#0-912783-34-6, LC#00-100326. VOLUME 3, BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIG HORN SERIES. $85.00
