MONTANA AND THE WEST SERIES

The Montana and the West Series is an on-going selection of original books pertaining to interesting and unusual subjects that are relatively unknown and less publicized than most. Books in this series are published occasionally with Montana as the setting for most of these titles. The volumes are always of highly quality, both content and production values. Published in a small run usually 750-1000 copies the editions frequently go out-of-print quickly. A signed, numbered leatherbound edition of only 50 copies is usually offered for sale and is much sought after by collectors. Custer, Brice C. SACRIFICIAL LION: GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER. 300pp. photos, maps, biblio, index. Foreword by Gregory J.W. Urwin. Finally, a Custer answers back! ! A perceptive biography by the author, Brice Calhoun Custer, whose great-great-uncle is the famous general, George Armstrong Custer. Brice Custer also critiques movies, television shows and museums devoted to General Custer. Gregory J.W. Urwin, Temple University, says, "I think it is fitting that a member of the Custer family should forward at this time to challenge the excesses of a media more interested in sale than accuracy. Brice Custer is not only the "Boy General's" oldest living relative, but he is the first since cavalryman. "The Sacrificial Lion" is a blunt, provocative book, and it needs to be. It is high time that someone challenged the glib, superficial, and lamentably unoriginal depictions of Custer that are regularly showered on an undereducated public. It is my hope that this book ruffles some feathers, stirs debate, and inspires more people to take a second look at George Armstrong Custer," AVAILABLE NOW! ! ! El Segundo 1999. ISBN#0-912783-32-X. LC# 99-61574. MONTANA AND THE WEST SERIES VOLUME 13.

Richard G. Hardorff ON THE LITTLE BIG HORN WITH WALTER CAMP: A COLLECTION OF W.M. CAMP'S LETTERS, NOTES AND OPINIONS ON CUSTER'S LAST FIGHT. 255 pages, 3 maps, 20 photographs, illustrations, bibliography, index. Full color portrait of General Custer by Jerry Crandall on the dust jacket. This volume of never before published material is the result of the avocational efforts of the late Walter M. Camp who was fascinated with the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Camp, (who died in 1925 before he could complete his proposed masterpiece), between the years 1908 and 1925, spoke and corresponded with 109 individuals who belonged to Custer's cavalry or to his Indian scout force, or were civilians attached to Custer's regiment during the years of 1908 and 1925. The letters were written by such notables as Generals Edward S.Godfrey, Owen J. Sweet, Charles F. Roe, Colonels Chas. A. Varnum and George S. Young, First Sergeants John Ryan and Charles Windolph, Sergeants Daniel A. Knipe and Stanislas Roy and Privates Augustus L. DeVoto, James M. Rooney, William O. Taylor and Peter Thompson. To this array, Hardorff has added thirty-three letters composed by Camp and sent to various correspondents. The letters deal with various aspects of Custer's approach to and attack of the Indian village, the burial of dead, the transfer of their remains in 1881, and the placement of lthe markers in 1890. James Willert, author of Little Big Horn Diary, says, "I have carefully read this especially rich collection of letters and interviews between Walter Camp and the officers, soldiers, scouts and others who had participated in that famous battle. The responses Camp received to his direct and probing questions are further enrichment of our knowledge and deeper understanding of this controversial battle. The book also presents Walter Camp's own conclusions concerning the battle and major figures - conclusions which were developed from his thorough and untiring search for the truth of what had really happened at Little Big Horn. "On the Little Big Horn With Walter Camp" is a superb and invaluable contribution to the study of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Camp letters and interviews, collected over a period of eighteen years, until Walter Camp's untimely death in 1925, comprise a contribution without parallel, and 'Dutch" Hardorff's book is a superb and well-crafted affirmation of this remarkable work."
