CUSTER TRAILS SERIES

Upton and Sons, Publishers, are pleased to present this open-ended series about, but not limited to, Lt. Colonel George A. Custer and the Sioux War of 1876. The series will include volumes that are carefully selected to provide the serious student of the American Indian Wars with views and perspectives never before available, and also insures the general audience of a smoothly flowing account of events as they unfold during the life of the Seventh Cavalry's charismatic commander which ended in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Each volume will be handsomely produced in an 8 ˝ x 11 format bound in red linen with gold stamping and will provide detailed descriptions and unusual photographs of the participants and the trails they followed. This has never been attempted before on this scale, and it is unlikely that an ensemble of gifted writers such as these will ever again combine their literary, photographic and artistic skills and the intellectual curiosity required to produce work of this depth. Published in a small run of usually 750-1000 copies some volumes are already out-of-print. A signed, numbered leatherbound edition of 50 copies is available but often is snapped up by collectors. Standing Orders for both the trade edition and the limited edition are available to insure the customers obtain their copies of these attractive volumes. Dealer inquires are welcomed.

Darling, Roger. BENTEEN'S SCOUT TO-THE-LEFT. This unique title was originally published in a small printing of 500 copies. On June 28, 1876, Custer divided his command, ordering Captain Benteen to scout to the left in search of the Indian village. Darling's study meticulously examines that aspect of the campaign. He drove and walked the route, reconciling official reports with times and distance. Bound in linen with gold stamping, this edition includes 21 photos, 10 diagrams, large folding map and endpaper maps, notes, and index. ISBN 0-912783-08-7. LC# 87050695 81/2 x 11, 120pp. $75.00

Darling, Roger. CUSTER'S SEVENTH CAVALRY COMES TO DAKOTA. New Discoveries Reveal Custer's Tribulations Enroute To The Yellowstone Expedition. Mint in 8.5 x 11 with attractive gold-stamped cover. Vol. II, CUSTER TRAILS SERIES, 230 pages, plus numerous photos and maps, frontis of Custer, app's, biblio, index, El Segundo 1989, endpaper maps, 1st edition. Using totally new primary source materials, the author has reconstructed the complete record of the formation of the 7th Cavalry in Dakota after it had been stationed in various posts throughout the South. Mrs. Custer's description of this event in her writings is thoroughly critiqued and revised as new information was revealed. The intrigues and infighting in the 7th Cav between Gen Terry, Col Sturgis, Capt Benteen and Gen Custer are thoroughly documented. The terrain is depicted by large aerial photos accompanied by photo-outline diagrams used to pinpoint important sited during the transfer. An important book in an important series. Robert M. Utley says, "Darling has dug important new material and marshalled it to shed new light on the personalities of the Seventh Cavalry and their relationships with one another. Such insights are not only inherently interesting but aid in understanding what happened on the Little Big Horn. In his book on Benteen's scout, Darling demonstrated a mastery of 'outdoor research.' In "Custer's Seventh Cavalry Comes to Dakota", he has demonstrated a mastery of "indoor research" - mining new material but, more importantly, understanding what it tells. ISBN#0-912783-16-8. LC#88-51070. $75.00

King, W. Kent. MASSACRE: THE CUSTER COVER-UP. CUSTER TRAILS SERIES, VOLUME THREE. The author, the late W. Kent King, concludes there was a major military cover-up after the Battle of the Little Big Horn. King applies journalistic research techniques to primary source materials which have been largely overlooked by prior researchers. Author King gives fresh new approaches to incidents long thought settled. The original battlefield maps are presented and, along with others -- 19 in all -- form the basis for this masterful study. More maps pertaining to the Custer Battle are found in this book than in any other publication up to this time. Just when you thought you had the whole thing figured out along comes W. Kent King to challenge historians of the past, present and future. Bound in the standard "Custer Trails Series" attractive red linen cover with gold stamping, 21 maps and diagrams, 8 1/2 x 11, 310 pages, bibliography and index. Long out-of-print since it was published in 1989, this reprint is complete in every detail. ISBN#:0-912783-15-X. LC:89-50557. $75.00
